What are Individual Learning Account?
Individual Learning Accounts are a new way to save money on the cost of learning. Backed by government and support by colleges, other learning providers and trades unions, Individual Learning Accounts offer a package of discounts that make it cheaper for you to get into learning.


Can I open an Individual Learning Account?
If you are aged 19 or over, you can open an Individual Learning Account. They are available to everyone - and are particularly useful for people who have not done a lot of learning before.


What do I get from an Individual Learning Account?
Once you've taken out an Individual Learning Account you'll be able to use one of the following discounts, depending on the kind of learning you want to do. Theses discounts are only payable against the course fees that you are responsible for and not against any part of the course fees paid for by others such as employers.

80% off some kinds of learning such as computer literacy skills and introductory maths up to a maximum discount of £200 in any one year.

20% off a wider range of learning up to a maximum discount of £100 in any one year.

For example,
- Classes in book-keeping or business administration.
- Refresher courses in IT.
- Food technology or food preparation and hygiene.
- Continual Professional Development courses in sectors such as plumbing,   electrical work or construction.
- GCSE or A-Level courses taken in later life.

But the 20% discount does NOT apply to:
- Normal driving lessons.
- Higher education courses or professional qualifications at degree level
  or above.
- Recreational activities where the outcome of the course is in pursuit of   leisure, such as chess lessons.
- Learning which is a statutory requirement for an individual's particular   employment.

N.B. to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from Individual Learning Account, each account holder can only have up to a maximum of £200 worth of any discounts in any one year.

How can I be sure my learning qualifies for a discount?
